Federal and Illinois Appellate
& Post-Trial Litigation
Navigating the complexities of appellate and post-trial litigation can be daunting for individuals and businesses alike. Whether challenging an unfavorable decision or defending a favorable one, having an experienced appellate litigation attorney is essential. That’s where The Keleher Appellate Law Group steps in.
Our firm regularly represents clients from all walks of life in federal and state appellate courts nationwide. Lead counsel Christopher Keleher, a former federal appellate court clerk, has extensive experience handling federal appeals in the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and Tenth Circuits along with the Appellate Courts of Illinois.
When you meet with us, we will assess the merits of your appeal and advise the best course of action. We know the applicable state and Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure and have an impressive track record of success in both civil and criminal appeals. Trust us to guide you through the appellate process and put the law to work for you.
The appellate process in both the federal and Illinois court systems involves reviewing decisions from lower courts. In federal appeals, the United States Court of Appeals, which consists of thirteen circuits (including the Federal Circuit), handles cases from district courts.
On the other hand, the appellate court system in Illinois consists of five districts.
- The First District in Chicago
- The Second District in Elgin
- The Third District in Ottawa
- The Fourth District in Springfield
- The Fifth District in Mount Vernon
Each district reviews decisions made by the trial courts located within its jurisdiction.
Appellate courts consider the arguments presented in written briefs and may also schedule oral arguments. The appellate court’s decision can affirm, reverse, or modify the lower court’s judgment, or it may remand (send) the case back to the trial court for further proceedings.

Appellate litigation requires a unique skill set and an astute understanding of the intricacies of the law. Unlike trial attorneys who present evidence and arguments to a jury, our appellate attorneys focus on legal research, persuasive writing, and oral advocacy before the appellate courts.
We are adept at identifying errors in legal proceedings and crafting compelling appellate briefs. Ultimately, engaging our experienced appellate litigation attorneys early in the process enhances your chances of success, as we can analyze your case from a fresh perspective and strategize accordingly.
